The Ancient Site of Gunung Kawi

Candi Gunung Kawi is located in the Pakerisan River, Penaka Hamlet, Tampaksiring Village, Tampaksiring District, Gianyar Regency, Bali Province, Indonesia. This tourist spot is a protected archaeological site in Bali.

Candi Gunung Kawi has approximately 315 stone steps along the banks of the Pakerisan River. The pristine atmosphere visible from the lush trees on the riverbank, as well as the sound of the sacred river’s flowing water, create a sense of being welcomed by nature. The stone steps leading to Candi Gunung Kawi are made of and framed with stone walls.

Upon reaching the temple complex, visitors will witness two groups of candis separated by the Pakerisan River. The first group is located on the west side of the river, facing east, consisting of four candis. Meanwhile, the second group is located on the east side of the river, facing west, consisting of five candis.

In the temple complex on the west side, there are also bathing pools and fountains. Observing these two temple complexes, tourists will be amazed by the neatly carved stone walls forming arched chambers that house individual candis. These candis were intentionally constructed in depressions to protect them from erosion.
