A complete guide to the Sumba birding adventure! In addition to the stunning savannah, exotic beaches, and ancient villages with megalithic tombs, Sumba is home to some extremely remarkable birds. Our enthusiastic birdwatching guides know just the right location and time to spot the endemic and beautiful birds on the island. You will be exploring the jungle to find the island’s special birds, such as Sumba Myzomela, Sunbird, Greater Sumba Boobok, Green Pigeon, and many more. Let the adventure begin!

Day 1

ARRIVAL WAINGAPU AIRPORT – LEWA

 

Welcome to Waingapu! The starting point of our Sumba Birding Adventure.

Upon arrival at the airport, meet and greet with our guide, and you will begin the journey. You will drive to Lewa after lunch at a local restaurant, the area where you will start our birding adventure. You will check in at the homestay in Lewa first, and you will have the day free to prepare for tomorrow’s early departure.

Day 2

WUNDUT FOREST – LANGGALIRU FOREST – LAKE KONDAMARA – BILLA FOREST

 

Wake up early to start the morning birding at 05.30 am. You will check out from the hotel, and a breakfast box will be provided. Today, you will go to Wundut Forest and Langgaliru Forest. In the two places, you can expect to spot: yellow-spectacled white-eye, wallacean drongo, little cuckoo-dove, red-naped fruit-dove, rainbow lorikeet, brown-throated sunbird, and black-naped Fruit-dove.

The next site will be Lake Kondamara, where you may find cattle egret, grey heron, purple heron, great egret, little egret, Javan pond heron, and little pied cormorant. After that, you go back to the homestay for lunch, check out, and then you will go to Billa Forest. Here, you may expect to find: Sumba Hornbill, Tenggara Paradise Flycatcher, and Thick-billed flowerpecker.

You go back to the homestay for lunch, check out, and then you will go to Billa Forest to find Sumba Hornbill, Tenggara Paradise Flycatcher, and Thick-billed flowerpecker. In the evening, you go to the basic homestay in Billa. When you arrive at the homestay, you will have dinner and take a rest.

Day 3

BIRDING IN BILLA

 

You are halfway through this Sumba Birding Adventure!

Today, you will also wake up early to start the morning birding at 05.30 am. You will go to other sites in Billa Forest to find: Sumba Brown Flycatcher, Cinnamon Banded Kingfisher, Sumba Myzomela, Sumba Flowerpecker, Sumba Sunbird, Helmeted Friarbird, and Yellow-spectaled White-eye. A breakfast box is provided. After breakfast, you continue the trip to look for: Sumba Green Pigeon, Rusty-breasted Whistler, Sumba Pitta, Indonesian Honey Eater, etc.

You go back to the accommodation for lunch and rest a bit. Around 2.30pm, you enter the forest again to look for: Spectacled Monarch, Broad-billed Flycathcer, Arafura Fantail, Mee’s Nightjar, Greater Sumba Boobok, etc. At night, you go back to the hotel for dinner and rest.

Day 4

BILLA FOREST IN BILLA – YUMBU – WAINGAPU

 

Another early morning birding at 05.30am. You will go to other sites in Billa Forest and look for: Tenggara Flowerpecker, Tenggara Paradise Flycatcher, Sumba Jungle Flycatcher, Chestnut-backed Thrush, Sumba Flycatcher, Arafura Fantai, and Spectacled Monarh.

A breakfast box is provided. Then you go back to the accommodation to pack and prepare for our next hunting trip in Yumbu village. Here, you may expect to find Sumba button-quail as well as other interesting species. A lunch box will be provided. At night, after dinner at a local restaurant, you go to your hotel in Waingapu.

Day 5

DEPARTURE WAINGAPU AIRPORT

 

Today is the last day of your birding adventure. Enjoy your breakfast, then, depending on your flight schedule, the driver will pick you up and escort you to the airport. Thank you for enjoying this Sumba Birding Adventure with Come2Indonesia! We look forward to seeing you again. Sampai jumpa!

  1. Price and Validity
    All prices are valid from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2025. Prices are net and non-commissionable; except for series groups, all rates are negotiable. All prices exclude insurance, extra luggage, visa and vaccination costs, personnel costs (such as laundry, telephone, drinks, room service, tips, etc.), and other costs specified as exclusive in the tour description. Tour prices are subject to change due to fluctuations in transport costs, fuel prices, taxes, and exchange rates, unless the tour has already been confirmed to the client by Explore Sumba.

 

  1. Payment
    Payments consist of a down payment and a final payment. The down payment is 30% of the total amount and must be made within 10 days of trip confirmation. The final payment is due 21 days before the trip starts, unless a prior agreement is made. Special conditions may apply for specific requests.

 

  1. Liability
    Explore Sumba is responsible for ensuring that the tours described on our website reasonably reflect the actual experience. Safety is our priority; if conditions are poor (e.g., unrest, landslides), the tour may be canceled. In such cases, we will modify the itinerary after obtaining agreement from the client, supported by written statements from both parties. If an agreement cannot be reached, Explore Sumba will charge for the services already rendered.

 

  1. Reservation
    Reservation requests must be submitted in writing via email and should include the confirmed itinerary, arrival and departure dates, flight details, type of services required, number of participants, and rooming list (for groups). Early reservations are encouraged, as they will receive prompt confirmation.

 

  1. Confirmation
    Explore Sumba will send confirmations as soon as we receive confirmations from our suppliers (hotels, restaurants, etc.). We will provide alternative options if certain services cannot be confirmed.

 

  1. Cancellation
    All cancellation requests must be submitted in writing via letter, email, or fax. Reimbursements will be calculated from the moment Explore Sumba receives the cancellation notice (customers may resend their cancellation if there is no response within 24 hours). All reimbursements will be processed within 30 days of receiving the cancellation.
  • Cancellations made 30 days before departure: 20% of the total amount will be charged.
  • Cancellations made 29 to 10 days before departure: 50% of the total amount will be charged.
  • Cancellations made 9 to 6 days before departure: 75% of the total amount will be charged.
  • Cancellations made 5 days or less before departure: 100% of the total amount will be charged.
  • Note: Conditions are subject to change based on hotel policies, and we will inform clients of any special circumstances.

  1. Children
    Children aged 0 to 2 who share a bed and meals with their parents stay free of charge. For children aged 3 to 5 who share a bed with their parents, a 50% discount applies.
